Dr. David A. Carbonaro began his career in dentistry by attending LeMoyne College for his Bachelor of Science in Biology. At the New York University College of Dentistry, he received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1975, and then attended the Boston University Graduate School of Dentistry for his Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Periodontology.
Deeply devoted to education, Dr. Carbonaro completed the rigorous testing to obtain his Diplomate Status from the American Board of Periodontology in 1991 and continues to recertify every six years. He also received a Certificate in Implantology at the world-renowned Misch Implant Institute.
His passion for education extends beyond his own pursuit of excellence. He formerly was an Associate Clinical Professor and Director of Periodontology at SUNY at Buffalo, School of Dental Medicine, and is Director of Periodontology at SUNY Buffalo Esthetic Dentistry Center. He is also the founder and director of the Southeast Periodontal Prosthetic Study Group of Rochester. However, his primary focus is educating his patients.
As an architect of sorts, Dr. Carbonaro looks at all of the elements in each patient’s particular case, and then builds a blueprint for a lifetime of good dental health. He begins by treating every patient as an individual, then proceeding one step at a time towards a comprehensive dental care philosophy. By employing science-based methods, he ensures predictable, long-lasting, and precise treatment.
One unique aspect of Dr. Carbonaro’s practice is his identification of the bacteria that cause a patient’s periodontal disease. By taking a sample and finding out which bacteria it is, he can then identify the most effective treatment for that specific case. Because there are many kinds of bacteria that cause periodontal disease, and different treatment methods work better with some than others, this process increases Dr. Carbonaro’s success rate.

On a Personal Note:
Having grown up locally in Auburn, NY, Dr. Carbonaro currently resides in Rochester. He is part of a dental family; his father was a dentist and his two sisters are hygienists. He enjoys skiing, golfing, working out, and running — having run in 25 marathons. He has two children.
